Thomas Middleditch


Thomas Steven Middleditch is a Canadian actor and screenwriter, known for his role as Richard Hendricks in the HBO series Silicon Valley (2014–2019), for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and Penn Zero in the Disney XD animated series Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero (2014–2017).

Education

He studied theatre at the University of Victoria before moving to Toronto, where he auditioned for and enrolled in George Brown Theatre School, but never began his course. He instead opted to make sketches on his own, and worked at a New Balance store for an income. He relocated to Chicago, where he took classes at The Second City and iO Theater, while also performing regularly. He was a founding member in 2005 of The Improvised Shakespeare Company. Due to immigration issues, he worked various cash jobs until Charna Halpern sponsored him to get his work visa. While performing on a Second City cruise, he got an audition for Saturday Night Live. Though he did not get cast, the routine he used in his audition landed him a network holding deal and he moved to New York City

Love life

He married costume designer Mollie Gates in 2015. In a 2019 Playboy interview, he revealed that the pair have an open relationship and said that "swinging has saved our marriage." In May 2020, Gates filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.

Career

Thomas Middleditch’s move to New York City became a major springboard for his showbiz career. He began appearing in commercials; most notably is a 2007 sketch video which he, alongside Fernando Sosa, made for Chicken McNuggets that was bought by McDonald’s and used as their commercial.

In 2009, Middleditch appeared as the lead character; Justin Frost, in the romantic comedy, Splinterheads. In March of the following year, 2010, he was drafted in a CBS pilot Hitched.

In May of the following year, 2011, Middleditch appeared in the web series, Jake and Amir. He had roles in films like Being Flynn (2012), The Kings of Summer (2013) and he equally guest-starred on several TV shows.

In May 2011, Middleditch joined the cast of the Paramount Pictures’ comedy film Fun Size. In December of that year, he was cast in Jay Roach’s The Campaign, alongside Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis.

In July 2012, Thomas joined the cast in the comedy film Someone Marry Barry and then appeared in the 2013 comedy fantasy film, The Brass Teapot.

Thomas Middleditch’s biggest moment came in January of 2013 when he was cast as the lead character, Richard Hendricks, in the HBO pilot series Silicon Valley. Middleditch did so well on the show, earning much critical acclaim since the show premiered in April 2014. He has received two Critics’ Choice Television Award nominations and one Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series so far.

In April of 2013, he joined the cast of the comedy film Search Party, as the character Daniel ‘Nardo’ Narducci. The same year, Thomas Middleditch made a cameo appearance in the hit movie The Wolf of Wall Street as a broker who got fired for cleaning his fishbowl during work hours.

He’s appeared as a hipster thief in the episode “Sunday Funday” on the show You’re The Worst.

In October of 2013, Thomas Middleditch voiced the lead character in the animated series Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero which ran for two seasons between 2014 and 2017.

Middleditch has also appeared in the movies, The Bronze (2015), Joshy (2016) and Once Upon a Time in Venice (2017), and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), among others. 

In Fall 2020, Middleditch will play in the lead role of Drew Dunbar in CBS comedy series B Positive which was written by Chuck Lorre. The series was originally supposed to air in March 2020 but production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however filming of the pilot had already taken place and so the show was moved to be CBS' only fall debut.
