Nelson German is a Dominican-American Executive Chef and Owner of alaMar Kitchen and Sobre Mesa Afro-Latino cocktail lounge in Oakland. He is also a contestant in Bravo-TV’s Top Chef season 18.

He went to study culinary arts at the New York Art Institute whereby he was taught the basic technique of preparing Mediterranean foods as well as integrating French techniques.

Through his persistence and passion for cooking, he rose up the ranks to be the head chef in reputable joins in New York such as Gramercy Park Hotel, Jerry’s Café, Joseph’s, and Citarella.
He has an unusual way of preparing his food drawing his style from his roots in Africa, his Dominican heritage, and his new style of cooking he learned in Asia, the Mediterranean, and his use of ingredients from California that are locally available and also sustainable.
His way of cooking is by letting his meals recite the stories of his life journey from his memories as a child, travels that inspired him, and his own innovative ideas and food adventure.
After finding his wife, he relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and became part of Supper Club SF, and embraced a new-found appreciation for California cooking.
His talents have garnered excellent reviews from San Francisco Chronicle and Oaklandmagazine and earned him spots at the prestigious Pebble Beach Food & Wine Festival and ChefsFeed Indie Week Portland.
He was also commissioned to showcase California Cuisine in Mexico City by Visit California.
