Acting has been a passion for the young Australian actress ever since childhood. Josephine Langford grew up in Australia, participating in school plays.
She then started modeling and understanding the intricacies of the entertainment industry. She became even more determined to make it in Hollywood.
Once she started auditioning for roles, she came face to face with unanticipated problems. Initially, if she was landing a role, she was having visa issues to work in the USA.
Other times, the roles passed her by even though the auditions went well. Finally, Josephine made her acting debut in the Australian short film ‘Sex Ed’ (2013). The seven-minute-long short-film had her portraying a student alongside actress Isabella Birighitti.
She teamed up with Birighitti again for her second movie, the horror-drama flick, ‘Gypsy Blood’ (2014). This was another short-film. Even though these were small roles, Langford credits them on teaching her valuable acting experience and especially working with an ensemble cast.
She landed her first full-length Australian movie ‘Pulse’ in 2017. Even though she only portrayed a student, the movie itself won an ‘Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards’ nomination. This acted in her benefit as it opened up new doors for her.
Josephine Langford made her official Hollywood debut with the drama-fantasy-horror movie, ‘Wish Upon’ (2017). She received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Darcie Chapman in the movie.
In 2017, Josephine made her return to Australian TV with the ‘AACTA’ award-winning series ‘Wolf Creek’. Her performance as Emma Webber in the episodes ‘Journey’ and ‘Outback’ established her as an upcoming star in Australia. Simultaneously, it guaranteed attention from Hollywood which has often found some of its biggest stars like Cate Blanchett, Margot Robbie, and others in Australia.
Consequently, it was around this time she auditioned for the role of Molly Samuels in the American romantic drama ‘After’ (2019). The movie is an adaptation of the adult fan-fiction novel ‘After’ written by Anna Todd. Actress Julia Goldani Telles was initially selected to play the character of the lead female character, Tessa Young but in July 2018, Telles left the movie due to scheduling conflicts.
Immediately following that, Josephine Langford was cast as Tessa Young. She was initially hesitant to play the lead role but Director Jenny Gage and the chemistry with Hero Fiennes-Tiffin who plays Hardin Scott convinced her she could do it. ‘After’ was released on April 12, 2019. The movie was panned by critics and enjoyed a very low score from them on Rotten Tomatoes. However, fans of the novel lapped up the movie. It is slowly becoming the surprise commercial hit of the summer. The movie has already generated more than US $60 million worldwide by early May 2019, against a production budget of only US $14 million. It is Josephine Langford’s highest grossing movie to date. In spite of the mixed reviews, the Australian actress has been universally praised for her performance.
In 2019, she also portrayed Clair in an episode of the horror TV series ‘Into the Dark’.
