Gabriel Chavarria is an American actor, best known for his performances as 'Jacob Aguilar' in 'East Los High' and 'Miguel Guerrero' in 'The Purge.'

He has 10 brothers and a sister. Chavarria’s parents are originally from Honduras. He was quite young when they had immigrated to the United States and are now settled in California.

 

Early life

Growing up as a talented athlete, at the age of 13 years, he was selected to be part of the 'Olympic Development Program' team. He has been a reserve member for a Honduran soccer team. He even got an opportunity to play in international tournaments across England, Spain, and the United States. Chavarria’s career trajectory changed when he was 16. He was playing basketball at a local recreational park when a casting crew spotted him. He was called for an audition for 'Freedom Writers.'

 

Initially, Chavarria had doubts, but with his elder brother David’s encouragement, he finally attended the audition and aced it. He received the official offer for the role soon after the auditions got over. Following this, Chavarria visited 'Paramount Studios' for the first time. This made him determined to become an actor.

Career

 Chavarria made his debut in 2007, with the character 'Tito' in the drama film 'Freedom Writers,' adapted from a compiled book by Erin Gruwell and his students.

His next project was the 2011 Chris Weitz-directed drama movie 'A Better Life,' based on 'Academy'-winning screenwriter Roger L. Simon. The film featured him as 'Ramon.’

Chavarria appeared as 'Jacob Aguilar,' a star football player, in the 2013-released 'Hulu' series 'East Los High.' He was cast as 'Daniel "Danny" Alvarez,' a skilled but troubled graffiti artist, in the 2016 drama film 'Lowriders.' His performance in the movie earned him an 'Imagen Award' nomination for the ‘Best Actor.’

In the 2017 science-fiction film 'War for the Planet of the Apes,' Chavarria played 'Preacher,' an ‘Alpha-Omega’ soldier struggling under the command of his disturbed colonel, played by Woody Harrelson.

Chavarria played ‘Chief Petty Officer Jimenez,' a ‘Navy SEAL DSRV’ pilot on ‘USS Arkansas,’ in the action–thriller feature 'Hunter Killer.'

In 2018, Chavarria was seen in the horror anthology 'The Purge.' He played the lead role of 'Miguel Guerrero,' a ‘US Marine’ with a mission to encounter violence in the streets to protect his family.

Chavarria was signed for a 'Netflix' series based on the life of Mexican–American pop singer Selena Quintanilla (2020), who was murdered by her manager. It is reported that he will play Selena’s brother, A.B. Quintanilla, a songwriter and bass guitar player, who was also an inspiration to his sister.

Apart from sports, Chavarria is passionate about music, too. He is the owner of the independent music label 'G & B Music Group.'

He and his brother have co-founded the 'West Coast Elite' soccer club. The two also manage the careers of players and various teams. The teams from the club now participate in international tournaments across the United States and Europe.
